Are weeds legal in Bangladesh?

are-weeds-legal-in-bangladesh

Bangladesh is a South Asian country with many problems on the horizon. In particular, the risks of flooding and rising sea levels (among others). Bangladesh is the most densely populated country in the world that you can easily see on a standard map. This density is putting enormous pressure on the country and the number of climate refugees is expected to continue to rise. The least vulnerable regions to flooding are also the largest regions where cannabis is produced. However, weeds are not legal in Bangladesh right now, and that doesn’t seem to be changing anytime soon.

Weed laws in Bangladesh

Information on cannabis laws in Bangladesh is scarce at best. What we found is the following:

Possession of less than 2 kg of cannabis could result in a 10 year prison sentence. Possession of more than 2 kg of cannabis could result in life imprisonment

This is according to Tareque Habib, assistant news editor and Bangladeshi local. The part of the death penalty is supported by the book “The Death Penalty: A Worldwide Perspective”.

This latest campaign mainly focused on yaba, methamphetamine pills that have become increasingly popular, but also on smoking cannabis in shisha pipes.

This practice was seen by many as an attempt to stay in power in a similar way to Duterte in the Philippines. At the end of December 2018, Sheikh Hasina and her Awami League party won 96% of the vote and easily returned to power for another term.

A repeal of the cannabis laws in Bangladesh is unlikely to happen until there is a new leader in the country or when the heart changes radically.
