Weed laws in Moldova

In 2008 the country of Moldova effectively decriminalized personal drug use. However, this does not mean that weeds are legal in Moldova as personal drug use remains a criminal offense. Buying, selling, trading and cultivating / manufacturing remain criminal offenses.

In order for it to be classified as personal use, it must be viewed as a small amount without the purpose of distribution. What is a small amount of cannabis? Well, we couldn’t find a correct source, but we believe it is 3 grams (mentioned below).

Still, if you are caught in Moldova with a personal amount of cannabis, you could still be fined up to 60 MDL ($ 3.31 at the time of writing) or 40 hours of community service. I would know which one I would prefer.

Talk to a local Moldovan

Question: F. How long have you been living in Moldova?
A. My whole life

Question: F. Can you tell me about yourself
A. I am 20 years old, I am studying at the Tourism University and have lived in the capital Chisinau my whole life.

Question: F. What is the general attitude towards cannabis in Moldova? Are people slowly changing their minds?
A. Every third teenager or student has tried cannabis. People over 30 are usually against it, but of course about 5% smoke. People over 50 are absolutely against cannabis. Yes, the situation is more tolerant than it was years ago when you did this, for example less than 3 gYou only pay around 40 euros as a fine.

Question: F. Are there certain areas of the country that are stronger for legalization? Are the larger cities generally more liberal in their views than America?
A. I think that only in Chisinau there are some liberal visions, in other cities there are too few users to develop such a vision.

Question: F. Can you see Moldova legalize recreational cannabis over the next 10 years? If so, do you think it would be a pretty smooth implementation without a lot of play?
A. I don’t really believe in legalization even in 20 years. The country is too poorly educated. We don’t have sex education, and around 60-70 percent think cannabis, cocaine, heroin, and LSD are all similar.
