Fear has become a hot button word lately. And for a good reason. 18% of Americans say they are afraid in any given year. It is the most common and widespread mental disorder in the United States. Anxiety can affect almost anyone and result from a number of factors. Fear can come from external factors such as intense situations or situations that we cannot control. It can also come from building other life experiences that aggravate certain times and make them more difficult than others. Unfortunately for those with anxiety, it can also come from internal factors – our own thoughts and genes. While these thoughts may have a purpose, they can still be painful. Fear can be absolutely debilitating. Despite the challenge of living with fear, only a fraction of the people are treated.

What is fear

The feeling of fear is not inherently bad. It is a normal part of life to be scared at times. It is part of our survival instinct that makes us aware of dangers, especially when we have new experiences. But when this sensitivity to danger does not subside, our fears or worries begin to disrupt everyday life. That is generally when anxiety becomes a problem. Sometimes even such a problem that we avoid work, friends, or home commitments. Fear no longer protects if we are not prepared to avoid a possible lion attack but can not stop thinking that Aunt Sally might be mad at us and we cannot get rid of the feeling that we definitely did or did something wrong get mixed up the future.

You may have noticed that there are symptoms of anxiety, both physical and psychological. Physical symptoms – sweating, increased heart rate, nausea can feel pretty awful. Psychological Symptoms – Worrying, racing thoughts can also be quite distressing. Your physical and mental symptoms generally interact and make each other worse. Even if knowing these thoughts and the changes in the body in the situation is exaggerated or unreasonable, people with fear cannot control them. Fear can be debilitating if it is permanently uncontrollable.

It is not uncommon for people who are afraid to self-medicate with drugs or alcohol try to cope with them and function throughout the day. Especially if it feels like that, this is the only option after trying negative side effects from medication. There are many prescription drugs such as SSRIs and benzodiazepines, but they can have side effects that are not pleasant.

Fortunately, CBD is emerging as a natural source for anxiety management with little to no side effects. It has been reported to work as a great addition to, or alternative to, prescription drugs. In 2019, a Gallup poll found that one in seven Americans already uses CBD and that 20% of those users used it to treat anxiety – the second highest purpose for CBD after pain management.

How Can CBD Help Anxiety?

There is a lot of ongoing research into how CBD works. There are things that we know for sure that the body makes its own cannabinoid compounds, which are similar to THC and CBD and are known as “endocannabinoids,” and that these chemicals interact with an entire endocannabinoid system (ECS) in our body. They do this by attaching to cell receptors throughout the body, which then triggers a physiological response from those cells, resulting in a decrease in inflammation, more rhythmic sleep patterns, and relief from anxiety.

There is increasing evidence that CBD affects the same receptors as serotonin. Serotonin is a chemical that is naturally produced in the body and is responsible, among other things, for a stabilizing mood. As a result, CBD has been found to reduce anxiety.

A preliminary report published in the journal Neurotherapeutics states, “Preclinical evidence conclusively supports the effectiveness of CBD in reducing anxiety behaviors, which is relevant to several disorders including PTSD, GAD, PD, OCD, and SAD.” Equally important, however, was that CBD also had “minimal sedative effects and an excellent safety profile.”

Another study published in 2019 found that when volunteers took a daily dose of CBD, anxiety levels decreased in 57 patients (79.2%) within the first month and continued to decrease during the study period in 3 patients ”.

CBD is a great option for treating anxiety. It is generally well tolerated by most people, has fewer side effects than most other treatments, and works well in a variety of settings.


Anxiety is a common illness that can affect anyone, even temporarily, due to stress, negative thoughts, everyday things, and which often feels uncontrollable.

While more severe cases of anxiety should be managed under medical supervision, there is increasing evidence that people with mild to moderate anxiety can find relief with a regular dose of CBD.
