Good sleep is critical to good health. Who wasn’t a bit out of the game or downright grumpy after a bad night? According to the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute, “Lack of sleep can lead to physical and mental health problems, injury, loss of productivity, and even greater risk [early] Death. “There are documented physical and mental health side effects of not getting enough sleep or not sleeping well. Unfortunately, some of us know this better than others.
In 2013 the CDC reported that “[a]It is estimated that 50 to 70 million Americans have insomnia or sleep deprivation. “Added,” Only a third of Americans get the recommended 7 to 9 hours of sleep each night. ” Only a third of us get enough sleep! If that doesn’t seem fair or reasonable to you, you’re right. That’s not fair. We deserve a good night’s sleep.
Especially since having a good night’s sleep improves our ability to remember things and learn new things. Our immune response is strengthened, which makes us less susceptible to disease. The hormones that control appetite are released and help us eat when we are actually hungry, not just bored or tired. During a good night’s sleep, our muscles repair faster, our blood sugar levels are more even, our bodies become less inflamed, and heart health is improved.
All of these physical changes that occur during our sleep affect our mood over the course of the next day. According to Harvard Health, sleep disorders affect our stress hormones and levels of neurotransmitters, which in turn affect our ability to manage our emotional health. Aka, we can better regulate our emotions and our thoughts after a good night’s sleep.
Why not something else?
We know we need to sleep, we want to sleep, but unfortunately for many of us we cannot fall asleep. Spending hours with your head on the pillows, awake, is pretty awful. Because of the psychological and mental stress of not sleeping, people have come up with many solutions to the problem of poor sleep.
According to the CDC, “nearly 9 million Americans use prescription sleeping pills.” Of the ten most common prescription sleeping pills on the market, only half will help you fall asleep and fall asleep. According to the Mayo Clinic, 80% of these prescription drugs can cause addiction. Other side effects include nausea and persistent sleepiness in the morning, and Ambien and Lunesta have been linked to sleepwalking.
Other prescription sleep aids include low-dose antidepressants with calming side effects. These aim to treat insomnia by reducing anxiety while inducing sleepiness, similar to CBD. But unlike CBD, they come with a slew of side effects, including sexual dysfunction and constipation.
With some prescription drugs, people trade their insomnia for side effects that are only slightly better than no sleep at all. In addition to this, people have also turned to alcohol to help them sleep. Although alcohol is known to cause sleep, it actually results in fewer hours of sleep and poorer quality of sleep.
CBD can offer a natural and safe alternative to help you fall asleep and fall asleep. The World Health Organization found that CBD is generally well tolerated and has found no evidence of abuse or addiction. CBD is a non-intoxicating compound made from hemp that was legalized federally under the US Farm Bill in 2018.
How does CBD work during sleep?
Instead of creating artificial drowsiness, CBD invites you to sleep with your own daily rhythm. It has also been found to provide relief from drowsiness and the persistent fatigue that other sleep aids leave behind during the day.
CBD works in conjunction with your endocannabinoid system (ECS) and regulates our body’s systems and cycles such as appetite and mood. The ECS seems to promote “homeostasis” – the optimal state of your body in which all needs such as hunger, sleep and mood are satisfied. When your body is well regulated and rested, you will be more efficient and feel better. In addition to the sleep benefits of CBD, it helps regulate your circadian rhythms so you feel tired at night and awake during the day.
Perhaps the most comprehensive study to date, it collected two-year data from over 400 people. The study, published in the Journal of Medicines 2018, asked participants to rate the severity of their insomnia each night on a scale from 1 to 10. The study found that over time, using CBD, the average self-report on severity dropped from 6.6 to 2.2. People’s insomnia improved.
In a recent study published in the Permanent Journal in 2019, over 100 people were treated with CBD for sleep and anxiety. They concluded that 48 patients (66.7%) had improved sleep scores within the first month. The same data also found that “anxiety levels decreased in 57 patients (79.2%) within the first month” and that CBD was “well tolerated in all but 3 patients”. Overall sleep improved and anxiety decreased. In addition, CBD did not adversely affect the sleep cycles of healthy volunteers.
