We’ve all been there, ready to fire and no papers, pipes or bongs in sight. It’s good that cannabis smokers are notoriously creative. A routine home inspection can reveal a wide range of possibilities for a smart homemade device. You go into MacGyver mode and quickly begin to see that you can make a bong out of practically anything. If you’re feeling extra resourceful, you can even turn an empty inhaler into a bong, or even take control of one of our little brothers’ games.

With elaborate chambers and a percolator, it might not be pretty, and it probably won’t be as durable as a store-bought device; and what the heck, you could even eat that thing when you’re done. The bottom line here is that it will get the job done. So, if you find yourself in the all-too-familiar situation of not having the regular tools, give one of these nifty solutions a try.

Homemade bong ideas

Homemade gravity bong

Apple bong: An apple pipe a day can be a good deterrent for the doctor. This is a quick and easy way to make a bong. You can take a fresh apple, poke a hole in the side for your mouthpiece, and then cut out the top for your bowl.

Bamboo Bong: If you are one of those eco-friendly cannabis users, this is the way to try making a bong. If you have bamboo, cut off a single stem and smooth it down with a piece of sandpaper. Drill a hole about an inch down for your bowl. You can choose any size bamboo depending on your lung capacity.

Carrot bong: This is ideal for vegans. Most vegans likely have a carrot nearby. Cut off the top of the vegetable and poke a hole in it. Be careful not to cut all the way through. Make a small bowl on top of the carrot on the other side of the mouthpiece that connects to the chamber you dug.

Frost Bong: This is a little more complex. You need to order a kit with instructions online. Don’t worry, once you receive the kit and follow the instructions, it’s easy to make. You can order at

Gravity Bong: Grab an empty soda or water bottle and another larger bottle. Cut off the bottom of the smaller bottle. Then cut off the top of the larger bottle and put the smaller bottle in the larger one. Fill the larger bottle with water. Take a small square piece of aluminum foil and break it. Wrap this foil over the top lid of the smaller bottle. Push it down a little so you can use it as a bowl now. Poke a few small holes in it with a pin or paper clip. Light the bowl of the smaller bottle. At the same time, lift the smaller bottle out of the larger one. You will notice smoke building up. Now pull off the bowl and inhale the smoke.

Homemade honey bear bongHoney bear bong: You will need an empty honey bear container, a knife or ice pick, and a detachable stem head. Cut a hole in the bear’s stomach. Withdraw the smoke from the top tip, usually carry the honey out.

Inhaler Bong: This one is pretty simple. Grab a standard empty inhaler, some aluminum foil, and a knife. Take the cartridge off and wrap the foil around it to make your bowl. Make a few small holes with a pin or paper clip. Now light up and breathe in.

Lego Bong: You need to build an airtight container with a bowl attached to it. You will also need a choke and a mouthpiece. This is where your skills with LEGOs come into play. The beauty of it is that you can make it any size you want.

Metal Pipe Bong: You may need to take a trip to the hardware store to make such a bong. There are many ways to do this. Your mind will begin to envision a variety of methods once you land in the plumbing gear. Go with whatever pieces appeal to you.

Pen Pipe Bong: Take a regular pen and unscrew it. Remove all parts from the chamber and place the tip on top of the tip. This will reverse the way it should fit in the pen. Fill the feather with grass and you are done.

Pop Can Bong: You need a normal aluminum can and a sharp object. Dent the side of the can to serve as a bowl. Poke several holes in the can. You’ll need to poke a second hole for a stranglehold. The smoke should be able to flow freely. Be careful with this method as smoking through an aluminum can is considered very unhealthy.

Pringles Can Bong: This one requires some hardware. To do this, you will need a jar of Pringles, a sharp object, a bowl with a handle, and some tape. Cut a small hole in the can for your removable bowl. Once you’re done glue it in place. Take off the lid for your mouthpiece. Be sure to clean the can or you will end up with tiny potato chips with your smoke. Use a knife or ice pick to punch a hole about three inches in one side of the top of the can. Make a second hole.

Starbursts: Any soft candy will do for this. All you need for this is candy, an ink pen. Start by squeezing several starbursts together, then drilling a hole in the center. Don’t go all the way through the hole. Make a small bowl on the other side of the mouthpiece you just made.

Toilet paper steam roller: Take a toilet paper or paper towel roll and cut a round. Cover the hole with aluminum foil and tape a few holes in the foil and the side for your bowl.

This small bong fits right in your pocket. First, drill a hole in an empty tic-tac box. You should use a regular down stick or an ink pen.

You put the bottom stem in the hole or you can use a pencil. You can use a metal screw or bolt for the bowl. You can also use the tip of an ink pen.

Any self-respecting stoner will have basic bong building as part of their repertoire. Constructing your own pieces ensures that regardless of whether you have the appropriate utensils on hand, you can still get stoned. Using a bong is a great way to maximize your hit as you may not get such a big hit with other equipment as easily and with minimal material.

So next time you want to smoke and have nothing to smoke, consider one of these easy-to-make homemade bongs. You will find that a quick look around the house brings up more ideas than you can imagine. Check out empty food bins, kids’ toys, or just search your trash to find your perfect bong that will get you high. Now you have everything you need to build a bong at home!
