Potential Amazon employees will no longer be disqualified for using marijuana

Amongst several other internal changes, Amazon’s CEO announced that they would be releasing their policy on using marijuana as a disqualification factor for potential employees.

According to Amazon, the move is intended to reinforce the company’s “commitment to being an attractive employer”.

In a blog post Dave Clark, CEO of Amazon’s Worldwide Consumer Division, said the change in state laws on marijuana resulted in Amazon (AMZN) no longer including the substance in the company’s pre-discontinuation drug testing, and that the drug is now treating the same way is used as alcohol for existing employees.

“In the past, like many employers, we have banned people from working at Amazon if they tested positive for marijuana,” the blog post said. “However, given that state laws are moving in the US, we’ve changed our course. We will no longer include marijuana in our comprehensive drug screening program for agencies that are not regulated by the Ministry of Transport … “

The post went on to say that the company “will treat it instead”. [marijuana use] the same as when consuming alcohol. We will continue to do impairment testing at work and test for all drugs and alcohol after each incident. “

Remember, marijuana stays in your system much longer than alcohol. Nanotechnological breath tests exist, but they are not yet widely used. However, the sensors on these devices can detect the THC content of molecules 100,000 times smaller than the average human hair, making them very efficient.

There is currently no legal threshold for cannabis impairment while driving (think 0.8% BAC), but employers are free to set their own limits. Although cannabis use does not exclude you from employment, it can still fire you initially if an accident occurs later.
