Vaping THC Vs. Smoking Nicotine: Study Shows Which Is Riskier

A new study suggests that vaping THC could be worse than smoking and vaping nicotine.

The study, conducted by the University of Michigan and published in the Journal of Adolescent Health, looked at the association between respiratory problems in adolescents who consumed cigarettes and vapes containing THC and / or nicotine oil.

Using survey results, researchers found that teenagers between the ages of 12 and 17 were more likely to cause lung injury from dry coughing, wheezing, and other symptoms that affected language, sleep, and exercise while vaping cannabis. The extent and duration of these symptoms are unknown.

“We discovered, and it was something that surprised us a little, that it was the lifetime of vaping cannabis that was associated with a far greater number of symptoms and a higher likelihood of having any of those symptoms than either E – to use cigarettes or cigarettes. Lead author Carol Boyd told US News.

The survey results were compiled from December 2016 to January 2018 prior to the onset of EVALI – the vaping disease that affects a large percentage of consumers. Boyd stated that some of the symptoms reported in the survey are likely related to EVALI, which mostly affected THC vape users.

E-cigarettes and vapes are relatively new technologies that, while eliminating lung irritants like smoke and paper, add a variety of elements and chemicals that are harmful and not too well understood. Regarding this survey, the final data contradicts the common belief that vaping and smoking nicotine is worse for your lungs than vaping and smoking THC.

“In short, it’s all bad, but if you vape cannabis too, you have more unhealthy respiratory problems than if you just smoke cigarettes or marijuana or vape e-cigarettes,” Boyd said. “Without a doubt, cigarettes and e-cigarettes are unhealthy and not good for your lungs. Vaping marijuana appears to be even worse, however. “
